IMSI, developed in 2004 by Benjamin Baartov, is an advanced male infertility treatment. It involves selecting the best sperm based on their morphology, which is magnified 7000 times, compared to 200x in ICSI. This high magnification allows embryologists to detect subtle sperm defects, increasing fertilization, implantation, and success rates while reducing early miscarriages.
IMSI is beneficial for those with multiple ICSI failures, severe male infertility (e.g., oligoasthenospermia or teratozoospermia), elderly male partners, and recurrent early miscarriages. It improves sperm selection by identifying those with no morphological abnormalities, enhancing the chances of a successful pregnancy. IMSI has shown better results for men who failed previous IVF-ICSI treatments. A 2008 Italian study found that these men had double the success rate with IMSI compared to conventional IVF treatments.
