The Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection also known as IMSI is a laboratory technique used in IVF treatments and involves injecting a sperm into the egg by an embryologist. This treatment was developed by Benjamin Baartov of Bar IIan University, Israel. IMSI is a notch above the ICSI procedure because it uses appropriately 35 times higher magnification as compared to ICSI. Thus allowing the embryologist to look at the sperm head’s every minute details.

IMSI Procedure
The IMSI procedure begins with induction of ovulation drugs in the mother where the mature eggs from her ovaries will be harvested and get prepped for fertilisation through IVF treatment. While the male sperm is washed and viewed at a magnification that is 600-700 times their normal size. This shows any irregularities in the sperm heads which could not have been seen otherwise. Finally, a sperm with the most normal looking heads are chosen by the embryologist. These are then injected through the outer shell of the egg and into the cytoplasm, where the fertilisation takes place, within 18-24 hours. After fertilisation the embryo culture continues until the uterine transfer takes place. The final result is a successful pregnancy with a healthy birth of a child.

When all procedures of Assisted Reproductive Technology commonly known as ART, fails then IMSI treatment is the only final solution.
