What is IUI all about?

IUI stands for in intrauterine insemination, where the sperm is injected directly into the uterine cavity near the time of ovulation. It’s also sometimes called donor insemination, alternative insemination, or artificial insemination. The procedure is performed either with your partner’s sperm or with sperm from a donor.

How does it work?

IUI treatment in Tamil Nadu is the first in line treatment that is recommended for unexplained infertility, mild endometriosis, male factor infertility etc. In general, IUI can do two things, the medication that you take before the injection will help stimulate the growth of eggs thus making the woman more fertile that she should without any medication of any sort. Then with the help of an injection, the sperm is placed inside the uterine cavity, avoiding having the two to swim through the cervical opening and into the uterus on its own, allowing it to meet the egg more easily.

What is the difference between IUI and IVF?

There are more differences than similarities but the biggest difference is that the sperm is not injected into the egg during the IUI to achieve fertilization. Fertilization is still not meant to happen naturally through an IUI and doctors just help to place the sperm a bit closer to the egg through the process.

Who needs IUI?

  • Women who may not ovulate, such as those with PCOS.
  • Women with unexplained infertility issues.
  • Male partners with minor semen abnormalities or ejaculatory dysfunction.
  • Male partners who have frozen sperm obtained prior to surgery, travel, or treatment for any disease
  • Anyone who needs donor sperm, such as same-sex female couples, heterosexual couples struggling with a malefactor or single women looking to conceive

How much does an IUI cost?

When compared to IVF it is less expensive and can be mostly covered by insurance, thus making it accessible, popular and minimally invasive at IUI centres in Tamil Nadu.

If you have decided to go ahead with IUI, how does it work?

Before the procedure, you will be needed to take testing to ensure if IUI is the best step for you. This is the same set of tests that are taken by women before they prepare for IVF which will help the doctor to understand the couple’s family needs better. You will next have blood work done to test the hormones that you possess as well as the genetic blood work to see if you are a carrier for the disease. The sperm that you have been using for the process will undergo analysis and a hysterosalpingogram will be taken if your fallopian tubes are open to allow the sperm to pass. If all of this looks good, you will be scheduled for an IUI at IUI hospital in Tamilnadu. The procedure itself takes only several minutes, and no anaesthesia is involved.
